Course Description

This class compares different sexualities throughout East Asia. We will focus on both historically cultural categories of sexuality along with the more recent emergence of gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, and other more globalized forms of sexual orientation and identity. The class pivots on what sexuality can tell us about culture and society in East Asia, along with the roles globalization and transnationalism play in sexuality, culture, and society. By examining ethnographies, visual culture like film/television and advertisements, music, graphic novels, and other works of scholarship, we will explore questions of identity, family and gender, work and labor, beauty, femininity and masculinity, sex, and activism.
